This New Year, Start with Self Care!

As we’ve reached another January, we recognize a familiar surge of motivational energy. For as long as most of us can remember, the transition from one year to the next has ignited feelings of newness, hope, and deliberate transformation.

Not Another Resolution

This year, let us be inspired not to resolve some massive and sudden change in ourselves, but rather to gently greet each new week (each new day) with an intentional focus as our general guide. In order to make the most of this practice, I’m suggesting a theme for each month to serve as the category for each weekly focus therein.

January has an undeniably unique and powerful energy. It sets the tone for the year ahead and offers a greater sense of mounting momentum than any other month. What we select to focus our attention on in January has enormous potential to impact our energy for the rest of the year.

With this in mind, our Theme for January is:

Start with Self Care

So often, we begin the year determined to change some aspect of ourselves. Whether directly acknowledged or subconsciously accepted, this suggests that we are not and will not be enough until we become something we currently aren’t.

Instead, let us feel moved not only to appreciate exactly who we are as we are, but to celebrate and honor our uniquely spectacular selves.

In order to pour into our goals, families, friendships, careers, and every other fantastic opportunity life will present to us in the coming year, we must first fill and fuel ourselves through intentional loving care.

Something New Each Week

There are so many types of self care, but we will focus on the following:

  1. Physical Self Care: Appreciating our bodies exactly as they are. They do so much for us, and we can make choices that show them love in return.
  2. Emotional Self Care: Our emotions are a barometer for how we are affected by the world around us. It is important, and deeply beneficial, to pay attention to how we feel and why, as well as make sure to acknowledge and honor the ways we want to feel.
  3. Intellectual Self Care: Growth is an essential part of our human experience. Let’s make sure we are developing our minds, skills, and interests in ways that stimulate and excite us!
  4. Sensory Self Care: Even the most simple of sensory experiences can have a powerful affect on our sense of well being. By engaging our physical senses, we can tap into a wealth of mental, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Harness the Energy of January

January has a powerful energy and sets the tone for the rest of the year. By focusing on and pouring into ourselves, we can harness that energy into not only a productive year, but one in which we FEEL more excited, joyful and connected to the peace we all deserve.
